Today we have visited the Geographical centre of Australia, we left Mia at Kulgera which is on the Stuart Highway and headed west for approximately 190km to Lambert Centre which has been calculated as the true centre of Mainland Australia. When we arrived, we were the only people here it was pretty special. To complete our North, South, East, West & Centre set, we now just need Steep Point in WA.
Just as we were leaving we noticed that Frank only had about 1/3 left on the fuel gauge. The road out was made up mainly of corrugated road, with the last 15kms mostly sand, this obviously chewed through the fuel more than we were expecting. We had two choices, try to make it back on what was in the tank plus our spare 10 litres in a jerry can, or drive further in the opposite direction for a further 20kms to Finke, refuel, and then head back again. We decided even though Finke would take longer and more corrugated road, we really didn’t like the idea of running out, so off to Finke we went.
When we got here the community which has about 6 streets, and 1 shop/servo was closed. There was no-one, anywhere it was like a ghost town. There were no trading hours on the shop giving any indication when they would next open, nothing. We called out but couldn’t get anyone’s attention. Just as we where leaving the managers of the shop walked out on their way home, evidently, they didn’t here our calls. At first, they were adamant that the shop was shut, but after we explained our predicament they let us get fuel, and suggested that since they opened the shop, we should get an ice cream as well. Phew! That was lucky.
This is our last night in NT, we are sleeping at a rest area on South Australia Border.
