Cape Le Grand

We left Esperance for Cape Le Grand National Park. All national parks in WA require payment on entry of $13 per visit or an annual pass for $92 (this includes MIA & Frank), we paid for our pass and then needed to pay and additional $11 p/p p/n to camp in the national park. It must be said that they do provide a good camp space, with flushing toilets and even a shower at this one, but still for our liking the pricing is a little high. For our setup we would prefer the option of a camp space with less amenities and a cheaper price to match.

Cape Le Grand National park is really amazing, similar beaches and bay/cove kind of coastline with lots of walking tracks and beautiful beaches. We stayed here for 3 days and met new friends Ray & Mel, and Martin & Rita.

Thistle Beach, which is two beaches around from Cape Le Grand Beach is the home of Whistling Rock. As you approach this rock it lets out a deep breathing noise, it sounds like the air from a blowhole, but as you get closer it stops. As it works our the sound is a rebound of the ocean, you need to be in just the right focal point to hear the “breathing noise” which is actually the ocean sound rebounding of the rock. Never seen that before!

Also whilst we were here on the windiest day of our stay (gusts of 40 kmph) we did the ‘Frenchman Peak Walk’. It was very steep and when we got to the summit we had to crawl on hands and knees, and then hang on to something to stand up otherwise we probably would have got blown off. The strength of the wind was amazing. Whilst the views were great, they would have been better on a clearer day. Checkout the Tunnel that goes straight through under the peak.
